Ferrari's Vasseur Reflects on Austin Frustrations: 'The Pace Was There for Victory'

Ferrari team boss Fred Vasseur expressed mixed emotions following the United States Grand Prix, where Charles Leclerc finished second but felt a win was within reach. Despite a solid performance, the team grappled with missed opportunities in qualifying that set the stage for their race day challenges.

Ferrari's weekend at the United States Grand Prix was a cocktail of promise and frustration. Team Principal Fred Vasseur acknowledged the bittersweet result, as Charles Leclerc narrowly missed a double podium finish, settling for second place. Despite showing competitive pace throughout the weekend, Ferrari faced challenges in translating this into a qualifying performance that would position them for victory.

Friday's practice sessions had shown much potential, with Leclerc topping the timesheets, a trend that continued with strong showings from Lewis Hamilton in FP3. However, when it came to qualifying, Leclerc found himself in P4 and Hamilton in P5, amid a tightly contested grid.

Ferrari opted for an aggressive two-stop strategy on race day, starting both drivers on soft tyres. This decision allowed Leclerc to climb into second place, overtaking Max Verstappen along the way, while Hamilton trailed in fourth.

Leclerc's second place was commendable, but the Monegasque driver was left pondering what could have been had he started higher up the grid. "Very early in the race, Charles was targeting P1," Vasseur revealed. "When you finish P2 and you aimed for P1, naturally there's some disappointment."

Reflecting on the race, Vasseur remained optimistic about Ferrari's trajectory. "This marks another race where we've scored the most points, and we're moving in the right direction," he asserted. "But when you feel you had the pace for a win and end up second, it's understandable to feel a bit frustrated."

Vasseur defended the team's strategic choices, believing the two-stop strategy was the right call given their starting positions. "Starting from P4 and P5 required some aggression," he explained. "Without the late Virtual Safety Car, Lewis might have caught up to Max."

The weekend highlighted the narrow margins that define success in F1. "A small misstep in Q3 had significant consequences," Vasseur noted. "It's a reminder of how critical it is to get everything right, from setup to tyre management."

He emphasized the importance of optimizing the SF-26's strong package throughout the weekend. "The pace was there from the start," Vasseur said. "But competitiveness is about more than just the car. It's about getting every detail right."

Finding that elusive window for peak performance, particularly in Q3, remains a challenge. "This weekend, many teams struggled in Q3," Vasseur observed. "Kimi Antonelli seemed to find something extra, while others, including us, took a step back."

As the season progresses, Vasseur is confident in Ferrari's ability to fine-tune their approach. "We're improving step-by-step," he concluded, "but the margins are so tight that even minor factors can shift you from second to sixth."

The United States Grand Prix served as a reminder of the delicate balance needed to translate potential into podiums, something Ferrari continues to chase with determination.
