Reliability Woes: How George Russell's 2026 Season Has Stalled

George Russell's championship bid has been hampered by a series of reliability issues, leaving him trailing behind teammate Kimi Antonelli. With multiple DNFs, Russell's potential points tally paints a different picture of his season.

George Russell’s hopes for a strong 2026 campaign have hit several speed bumps, most recently at the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, where he retired while running third. This DNF marked yet another instance of Mercedes’ reliability woes this season, with Russell now trailing his teammate Kimi Antonelli by 84 points. The Italian driver finished second in Malaysia, further extending his lead as the season nears its conclusion with only 183 points left to play for.

Russell, running close behind Max Verstappen and Antonelli under the Safety Car, found his race cut short just before the restart as he parked at the pit lane exit, visibly frustrated. "It's unfortunately happened too many times this season," Russell remarked, encapsulating the sentiment of his challenging year.

Points Lost to Reliability

Russell's season has been peppered with DNFs, each costing him vital points. In Canada, he was poised for a top finish when a battery failure ended his race. With Mercedes leading the field, Russell was on track for at least second place, potentially losing 18 points.

In Hungary, a water leak during qualifying left him starting seventh. To add insult to injury, his anti-stall system engaged at the start, relegating him to the back of the field on a notoriously difficult track for overtaking. Despite a solid recovery to seventh, Russell likely missed out on a fourth-place finish, equivalent to six points.

The recent Bahrain GP in Malaysia saw Russell in line for a third-place finish before another power unit issue struck. With 15 points lost, it's a continuation of Mercedes’ engine troubles this year.

Other Challenges

Russell's races in China and Japan also had their share of misfortunes. In China, a gearbox issue during qualifying disrupted his rhythm, though he still managed a second-place finish. In Japan, unexplained vibrations affected his car setup, leading to a fourth-place finish instead of potentially third, costing him an estimated five points.

At Spa, a poor start due to deployment issues led to a collision with Lewis Hamilton, ending Russell’s race prematurely. With the potential for a podium finish, this DNF likely cost him 12 points.

Total Estimated Points Lost

Adding up these mishaps, Russell has potentially missed out on 56 points this season due to reliability issues and misfortunes on track. While these are estimates, the DNFs in Canada and Bahrain alone have cost him 33 points, enough to make his championship bid far more competitive.

Antonelli's Reliability

Kimi Antonelli hasn't been immune to reliability issues either. In Barcelona-Catalunya, an electrical shutdown while running second cost him 18 points. At Silverstone, a wheel shield failure and subsequent penalties saw him finish out of the points, losing a likely second-place finish.

Though Antonelli has lost points, Russell has twice benefited from his teammate's misfortunes, gaining positions and reducing the gap slightly. Yet, it's clear that Mercedes, despite leading Ferrari in the Constructors’ Championship, has left points on the table this season due to reliability struggles.
