Liam Lawson Reflects on Verstappen Clash After Challenging Mexican GP

Liam Lawson described his Mexican Grand Prix weekend as tough following a clash with Max Verstappen in practice. As he awaits news on his Racing Bulls seat for 2027, he remains focused on learning from the experience.

Liam Lawson, who partnered with Max Verstappen at Red Bull for two races in 2025, has opened up about the difficulties he faced after their incident during the Mexican Grand Prix practice session. The clash, which resulted in both drivers receiving a grid penalty, added to Lawson's challenges over the weekend.

Lawson, starting from the pit lane due to a disqualification in qualifying for a technical infringement, managed to climb back to finish seventh. This performance helped Racing Bulls strengthen their position in fifth in the constructors’ standings. Despite the recovery, Lawson admitted that the incident with Verstappen had a significant impact on his weekend.

Reflecting on his interaction with Verstappen, Lawson revealed he reached out to apologize, acknowledging that the situation added stress to his race weekend. Verstappen, on his part, remarked that it wasn't the wisest move for Lawson, given the New Zealander's uncertain future with Red Bull's sister team.

Lawson remains without confirmation for the 2027 season, despite outperforming his teammate Arvid Lindblad by a considerable margin. The emergence of Red Bull junior Nikola Tsolov, currently excelling in the F2 feeder series, has cast doubt on Lawson's seat security. However, sources suggest Lawson is likely to be retained, with Tsolov potentially taking on a reserve role.

When asked about his situation, Lawson expressed disappointment over the uncertainty, stating, "It’s obviously a massive shame," but added that he is focused on maximizing his performance in every race. "I’m obviously trying to do everything I can each time I get in the race car," he said, recognizing that much of the decision-making is out of his hands. With a determined mindset, Lawson plans to continue proving his worth on the track.
