FIA Clarifies Colton Herta's Super Licence Points Confusion

Colton Herta, aiming for an FIA Super Licence, found himself one point short after the Mexico City Grand Prix FP1 session. Despite Cadillac's belief he'd reached the necessary points, the FIA's review revealed a miscalculation related to IndyCar standings.

Colton Herta's quest for the FIA Super Licence took a slight detour after the Mexico City Grand Prix. Participating in FP1, Herta aimed to inch closer to the elusive 40 points required. Cadillac was under the impression that Herta needed just one more point, and with 30 laps completed, it seemed he might have reached that milestone.

However, after the session, the FIA clarified that Herta is still one point short. This discrepancy stemmed from an adjustment in the 2025 IndyCar standings. Originally, Herta was classified sixth, but a review placed him seventh, just behind Felix Rosenqvist due to Rosenqvist's superior count of second-place finishes. This change affected Herta's points tally, leaving him at 39.

Herta, who has been a topic of interest for F1 teams, notably when Red Bull considered him for a potential drive, has been working towards accumulating Super Licence points through Formula 2 and FP1 sessions with Cadillac. Despite his efforts, he still needs one more point to make the cut.

Cadillac's team boss, Marcin Budkowski, mentioned that Herta might participate in another FP1 session before the end of the 2026 season to secure his eligibility for Formula 1. With points from his 2023 performances soon to expire due to the three-year rolling window, it's crucial for Herta to act quickly.

Herta's journey in motorsport, marked by his runner-up finish in the 2024 IndyCar standings earning him 30 points, highlights the challenges of navigating the FIA's licensing system. With his current total standing at 39 points, the next steps will be critical for Herta's Formula 1 aspirations.
