Daniel Ricciardo advises young F1 sensation Kimi Antonelli that his current success may not last forever. Ricciardo reflects on his own career, emphasizing the inevitable challenges Antonelli will face as he gains experience in Formula 1.
In the world of Formula 1, young Andrea Kimi Antonelli is on the brink of making history. As he prepares for the Mexico City Grand Prix, he stands just one top-nine finish away from clinching the world championship, a record-breaking achievement at the tender age of 20. While the spotlight shines brightly on Antonelli, seasoned driver Daniel Ricciardo has a few words of wisdom to offer.
Ricciardo, who knows a thing or two about early success, sees parallels between his own career trajectory and Antonelli's current rise. Back in 2014, Ricciardo made waves by outperforming then four-time champion Sebastian Vettel, securing three wins for Red Bull and establishing himself as a formidable competitor. However, he soon learned that the road to sustained success in F1 is littered with challenges.
Speaking on F1's Beyond the Grid podcast, Ricciardo described youth as a 'superpower,' noting that Antonelli's current lack of 'baggage' allows him to race with a carefree attitude. "I got asked by a friend about Kimi Antonelli the other day and I said, âIgnorance is a superpower,â" Ricciardo shared. "Being young is a superpower, and being ignorant, and not being exposed to the world."
Ricciardo reflected on his own experiences, recounting how his early years at Red Bull felt almost effortless. "I remember my first year at Red Bull, youâre naive, youâre young, youâre ignorant and it comes easy. Oh wow, Iâm winning, cool, Iâll just keep winning because Iâm the best," he recalled. But as the years went by, Ricciardo discovered that the intensity of the sport can weigh heavily on a driver's shoulders.
David Coulthard, another F1 veteran, has chimed in, suggesting that Antonelli needs to prove he's not just a 'one-hit wonder.' It's a label that has dogged Ricciardo at times, reminding everyone that early success doesn't always guarantee a smooth path forward.
Despite Mercedes not being as dominant as they were earlier in the season, Antonelli's lead has remained largely unchallenged. While rivals at Ferrari, Red Bull, and McLaren have put up a fight, none have managed the consistency required to seriously threaten his position at the top.
For Ricciardo, the transition from a relatively easy season in 2014 to a winless 2015 was a stark reminder of the sport's unpredictability. Although he returned to winning ways in 2016, Red Bull's shifting priorities towards Max Verstappen eventually led Ricciardo to seek new challenges with Renault by 2018.
Antonelli's current dominance might seem effortless, but as Ricciardo suggests, it's only a matter of time before the realities of F1 life catch up. For now, Antonelli can enjoy his 'sweet spot'âbut he should heed Ricciardo's advice and prepare for the inevitable ups and downs that lie ahead.
