Kimi Antonelli is on the brink of clinching his first World Championship at the Mexico City GP. With a substantial lead, the young Mercedes driver needs only a ninth-place finish to secure the title.
Kimi Antonelli took a significant step toward his first World Championship with a victory in Austin, setting the stage for potential triumph at the Mexico City Grand Prix. At just 20, the Mercedes driver is on the cusp of making history, needing only a ninth-place finish to claim the Drivers’ title, regardless of what George Russell and Lewis Hamilton manage to achieve.
Antonelli’s nine victories so far put him ahead of the pack, even if he were to retire or finish outside the top 10 in Mexico City. Unless Russell or Hamilton win the race, Antonelli will secure the championship thanks to his superior win count. To keep their slim hopes alive, either Russell or Hamilton would need to win every remaining race this season, while Antonelli requires just two more points to ensure victory.
Even in the event of a last-minute cancellation of the final races and a replacement race in Europe, Antonelli would still be 23 points clear, securing his championship win.
The odds are heavily in his favor, and without a Russell or Hamilton victory in Mexico City, the title is Antonelli’s. Despite this, Antonelli has expressed his desire to win in style, stating after his Austin victory, "I’m going to approach with the same mindset, just trying to have fun and hopefully fight for another win. It would be best to finish well on a high."
By clinching the title this weekend, Antonelli would surpass Sebastian Vettel's record as the youngest World Champion by over three years, marking a remarkable milestone in his burgeoning career.
