Lewis Hamilton personally reached out to Esteban Ocon after Haas confirmed the end of Ocon's tenure with the team. Despite limited support from fellow drivers, Hamilton's gesture stood out as Ocon faces an uncertain future in Formula 1.
Lewis Hamilton has shown a touch of camaraderie amidst the competitive world of Formula 1. Following Haas' decision to replace Esteban Ocon with the rookie Rafa Camara for the 2027 season, Hamilton took a moment to offer some personal support to Ocon, who now finds himself without a seat on the grid.
Ocon, with a decade of experience in F1, is facing a potential hiatus from the sport but remains hopeful of a return. As he prepares to step back from racing after five more races, Ocon revealed during the United States Grand Prix that Hamilton was one of the few to reach out directly. "Lewis came to me actually in Austin," Ocon shared. "We chatted a little bit about the situation and how things went, but nothing really to say much more. [But it was nice to make the effort], for sure. Yeah, definitely."
While Ocon has not received many messages of support from his fellow drivers, he did mention that Lance Stroll was another who spoke to him. Nonetheless, Ocon downplayed the need for public support, acknowledging the tough nature of the sport: "We are all living in that same thing. If you don’t perform, you are the worst. If you perform well, you are the best."
When asked about his conversation with Ocon, Hamilton declined to share specifics, emphasizing the private nature of their talk. However, he praised Ocon as "one of the nicest guys here" and expressed sadness at his departure: "I think he’s a very, very talented driver, and I think he deserves to be here. But, when one door closes, it opens up new opportunities for something new and better."
Ocon, reflecting on his career so far, expressed satisfaction with his performance, noting that he had maximized the car's potential to the best of his ability. "There are always little things that you can do differently, but not really," he said. "I think what I’m happy with is how I’ve maximised the performance of the car, whatever that performance of the car was."
As Ocon's immediate future in F1 hangs in the balance, Hamilton's gesture of support underscores the respect he has earned among his peers, even as they compete fiercely on the track.
