Kimi Antonelli stunned Mercedes boss Toto Wolff with a pole position lap at the US Grand Prix, setting up a potential title win. Despite Mercedes' recent struggles, Antonelli's performance surprised many, including Wolff.
Kimi Antonelli delivered a pole position lap at the United States Grand Prix that left even Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff taken aback. As the Italian driver gears up for a shot at clinching the F1 title, his performance in Austin was both unexpected and impressive. Antonelli's win on Sunday could secure him the championship.
Throughout practice sessions at the Circuit of the Americas, Ferrari, led by Charles Leclerc, appeared dominant. Lewis Hamilton also showed strong form in final practice, suggesting that Mercedes might be in the hunt. However, when it came to qualifying, Ferrari fell back while Red Bull and McLaren seemed to improve.
Mercedes had been generally lapping in the mid-top ten range, until Antonelli unleashed a remarkable Q3 lap just as the track conditions peaked. With few improvements from other drivers, Antonelli secured his seventh pole of the season, positioning himself favorably for Sundayâs race.
"Itâs still a little bit of a surprise," Wolff admitted to Sky Sports. "I told a guest in our garage to expect something between P3 and P5, so they probably think Iâm not great at predictions. We didnât see that lap coming."
Mercedes is still fine-tuning a major upgrade package introduced in Malaysia, which had seen the team lose some ground. Wolff noted, "The car is still very much on the edge. If you manage to drive it just right, you can extract that performance. But if you miss that peak, like we did with George, you're looking at a deficit of three to four tenths. We want a fast and predictable car, which isnât quite where we are yet."
George Russell will start from fifth, and if Antonelli wins, Russell needs to finish in the top eight to keep his title hopes alive. Track limits have been a headache for all teams, with over 250 violations reported over the weekend. Antonelli himself narrowly avoided a penalty, leading Wolff to joke about giving him a cushion for better visibility.
"Itâs a secret gift we have for him," Wolff quipped. "He pushes the limits so much it's like he's on autopilot. Iâd rather slow down a racehorse than try to speed up a donkey."
While a championship win this weekend is possible, Wolff plays it cool, saying, "No, weâre not talking about that. Itâs not realistic, and I donât think we are the quickest in the race. Itâs about scoring points and hopefully, eventually winning."
